If you’ve decided to install an elevator in your commercial building, or you’re replacing an existing system, there’s still a little more work to do before you get to the installation. When selecting an elevator, there are several considerations to keep in mind so you can get the right choice for your building.

Elevators may seem like a staple in commercial buildings, but not every company has one. While a commercial elevator is not a necessity, they can benefit certain types of commercial buildings more than others. Since an elevator is a potentially large investment, consider these factors to tell if a commercial elevator is right for your building.

There has been a recent change in the New York City (NYC) Department of Buildings (DOB) Building Code, which must be addressed by January 1, 2020, for elevators to be in compliance with ASME A17.3. This code change has enormous implications; in fact, the provision impacts up to 40,000 elevators out of the 65,000 throughout the city. It addresses a spcific safety issue: that an elevator car will never move with its doors open. Unfortunately, that hasn’t always proved true.

When well-maintained, an elevator can last for decades. That may seem like a reason to keep your commercial elevators as they are, but there are several major benefits to modernizing your elevator. It may be time to make some changes in your commercial building.
